In the one semester course I cover all the basics of using creative software (illustrator, photoshop, indesign, lightroom, after effects, a processing workshop, final cut pro, as well as file formats, printing, mac basics and different methods for creating in screen or print media). Embedded within learning technical aspects, we explore the concept of 'digital form creation' using systematic thinking, generative tools and mathematical parameters, with emphasis on 'digital craft'. The circles are part of an introductory to Illustrator project. The students are shown several basics of working within the program and then we quickly dive into more complex possibilities to create form. The students are asked to generate at least 50 different iterations of a circle using only black and white 'graphic' vectors. The only major rule is that it needs to exhibit the concept of 'gestalt' and still maintain the 'syntax' or formal property of a circle. Each student narrows down the 50 sketches to their 10 best, refine them and demonstrate how they are created. This poster was exhibited along with all the student sketches to showcase the work from the class as part of our new VCUQatar building opening event in the Fall of 2010. The circles on the poster were all generated by my sophomore students. Pornprapha, along with Muneera Spence, co-chaired an international design conference at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. I helped concept and co-create the original identity system along with Levi Hammett and Jordan Gushwa. I used the identity system as inspiration to design a series of diagrams for the publication. The diagrams needed to be simple, playful, and convey the essence of the conference. I created a few diagrams within the publication and contributed images and text throughout the publication. The illustrations were inspired by the dichotomy that seems to exist between the stark black burqa's worn by the many woman in the gulf countries and the often times elaborate and colorful clothing underneath. The colors also reflect the outgoing and radiant inner personalities of many of the woman here that is often not portrayed outwardly to the general public. The color palettes, textures and other graphical elements come from my ongoing 'visual audit' of Qatar.
