Living in Doha, Qatar, I am accustomed to seeing trucks similar to this (there are a lot of workers from Pakistan and Kerala here). However, the trucks in Kerala were much more colorful, detailed and personal. While in Kochi, we asked our guide if he could stop if he sees a parked Lorry truck, he said he knew a place where the lorry trucks park while on break and took us to the spot. As a future interest, I would like to make a short film documentary about the process of painting the trucks and the history behind it. The little information I learned was that each truck is personalized for the driver and the colors, graphics and names are relative to religious affiliation (Christian, Hindu, Muslim). moments I have encountered. Thanks to our homestay in Thalassery, along with their guide and assistance, we were able to observe and partake in this event, as well as photograph special moments such as the face painting, which is typically off limits to everyone. I am not going to attempt to describe the complex history of this ritual, but it is based tradition dating back more than a thousand years. Seeing the colorful customs up close and watching the ritual of sitting on fire was quite amazing. Being able to experience the Theyyam Ritual is one of the best travel moments I have encountered. A popular tourist attraction is to ride a 'Kettuvallom', which is a house boat with a unique design specific to this region. Personally, I was somewhat skeptical because I thought it might be too touristy, but it turned out to be a great day. We were the sole passengers on a small kettuvallom that traveled slowly through the beautiful backwaters. Along the way we made a stop near a church (I cannot remember the name), but it was very unique. The inside was all made of hand-carved painted wood and seemed more like a Hindu temple than a typical Catholic church. Close to the church was a small craftsman shop. We stopped in for a short visit and the owner was very kind to show us around and let us take photographs. He held a university degree in sculpture and make a living carving wood statues for any event or structure, most of the work seemed to be Christian churches. He also had other wonderful wood carvings and a few pretty amazing miniature boats. As a note, I recommend the full day trip on the kettuvallom as opposed to the overnight stay. the state of Kerala. We stayed mostly in the Fort Kochi area, technically a small island, but is also a very old part of the city and major port. This area was definitely more touristy than other parts of Kerala, but was also quite interesting. The city was a mix of contemporary and traditional shops and restaurants (we stumbled upon a wonderful teahouse), as well as a blend of culture. While there I learned that Kochi has a complex history, as one may guess in India, and has been a port city controlled by the Dutch, Portugese and British. Fort Kochi has been home to Hindu, Christain, Jewish and Islam, and in certain points in history the different religions even mixed and shared places of worship. One of our drivers, for example, had three different names, Hindu, Muslim and Christian names, that he used when interacting with different family members. Usually there is cheap airfare from Doha, so I would like to visit Kochi again and just hang out in that area for awhile instead of traveling around Kerala. This area seemed more remote and full of wilderness, with small mountains, thick forests and tea plantations everywhere. The car ride from Tellicherry to Wayanad was very long and slow and quite an experience, I'm not sure I would ever do it again. We stayed in a small 'cabin' in the middle of the forest area. Monkeys would climb on our rooftop and every morning I woke up at around 5am, made a cup of tea and sat on the balcony to watch and listen as the entire jungle came alive with the sunrise. One morning I decided to wake up extra early and hike up to the top of the nearby tea plantation and watch the thick fog twist, turn and slowly dissipate as the sun rose over the mountain. It was a spectacular moment that could not be captured properly with any media. We also visited a bamboo factory that was established to promote eco-friendly manufacturing and economic growth in the area. Although some of the murals are quite beautiful objects on there own, I especially enjoy seeing the layers of activity... tags on top of ripped posters on top of murals on top of graffiti, etc. These are only a few, but there are so many areas that seem like collaborative art projects overtime instead of simply graffiti.
