A Cross-Cultural Documentary Film:
Working &#38; Learning Together in a Global Community

In May of 2010 nine students from Department of Architecture at University of Manitoba in Canada arrived in Damongo, a small village in Northern Ghana. The team was lead by professors Kelley Beaverford, from UM and Leland Hill, from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. Together the team collaborated with a group of local artisans, construction workers and members of the community to plan and construct a new facility for the girls of St. Anne’s Boarding House.

The project provided students with an opportunity to work within a community outside of their own familiarity with the intent to encourage more socially responsible design solutions in the future and inspire design thinking needed for our new global culture.

The documentary film follows the construction of a new kitchen, dining and study area facility for the St. Anne’s girls, but focuses on the interaction and educational exchanges between the local construction team and the students. The building project was unique because the entire structure was built onsite, mostly from raw materials, which is quite different from many other high-cost prefabricated building projects. From mixing mortar and building window frames to making sun-dried bricks to build a wood-fired stove, the architectural and design students had to adapt to new ways of production while using their previous knowledge to aid with solving problems.

Throughout the film, ‘More than Brick and Mortar’ captures the struggles of the group, life during the 40 plus days in Ghana and the progress of the project. The film also branches out from the job site into the larger community and provides a glimpse into local cultural, artisans, school visits, the topic of ‘girl education’ and the lives of the St. Anne’s boarding house girls. Overtime the film reveals the transformation between the students and workers, as well as the appreciation for Claudius Bangfo, the lead contractor and mentor to many, who passed away shortly after the completion of the project.

‘More than Bricks and Mortar’ is based on the course ‘Service Learning In A Global Community’ lead by Kelley Beaverford.

The project was initiated by Tools for Schools Africa, who then contacted professor Beaverford because of her work course work ‘Service Learning in a Global Community’ and research projects in Turkey, Uganda and most recently in Sri Lanka.

The film has a runtime 91 minutes.

Spring Semester 2010 / Graphic Design Field Study 
Traveling through the countryside of Kyoto was quite amazing. The picturesque scenes along the river looked like settings old Ukiyo-e prints. Nara was magical and the sacred deer roamed free and could be found everywhere.

The poster is 4 color offset print and uses a combination of digital transparency and overprinting to create the effect.

Faculty Art Exhibition
A poster created for a faculty art exhibition at Michigan State University. The poster needed to be two posters in one. One side announcing the show the other side to promote the department for student recruitment. I based my concept on the two-sided idea and designed a poster that used cyan, magenta and yellow on one side and black on the other. The black plate could be overprinted on the cmy plate so that we could create a series of different posters. 

In addition, the graphics on one side aligned with the graphics from the other so when the poster was posted on a window the graphics would be translucent to form a new image. 

This poster was awarded How Magazine's Top 10 Posters in 2009. Ten winners were selected from approximately 1600 entries.

This is a self initiated project that was originally developed in 2002 with Kieran Lynn as part of a collaborate research project involving voting and youth culture. I continued to develop the project during the next two elections and created a series of inkjet posters and other ephemera.

An interactive book &#38; text project. I was interested in creating a 'low tech' interactive project inspired by walking through the city near a bay on a cold foggy morning. The plexi panels can be reconfigured to make different 'poems' by connecting words and phrases.

Spring Semester 2010 / Graphic Design Field Study 
I had the opportunity to visit several temples and shrines during my visit to japan. Each seemed to be unique in it's own way. I particularly enjoyed the Todai-ji Temple in Nara and the Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto.
